Australia - flying the flag for green energy
For some reason, I’ve always thought Australia to be a bit of a Pariah as far as green energy is concerned.
With enormous reserves of open-cast coal, Australia has never had to go far for its generation. It was slow onto the carbon taxation front, and is now back-peddling like mad away from it.
So it was a surprise to read that, from the start of 2013 to September 2013, South Australia reached 30% in renewable generation output, with a steady growth in wind generation gradually displacing coal-fired generation.
Coal made up just 16% of power generation, gas 45%, wind 27%, and net interconnector imports 12%.
So Australia's not as brown as I thought.
