Growers see the latest in LED lighting on GrowSave study tour to Holland
Energy savings, higher yields and best practice were all on the agenda last week, when we took a group of 30 growers on a GrowSave study tour to Holland to see the latest in LED lighting technologies for horticulture.
Dutch growers are really pioneering the use LEDs, and are using them in some innovative ways. During the visit, the group saw the latest developments, and how LED lighting is being used to deliver improved crop performance and cost savings in a commercial environment.
We had the chance to see LEDs being used on a wide range of crops, including flowers, salad vegetables and herbs. We also got an insight into some of the more innovative uses of the technique, in applications such as multi-layer growing and programmed crop scheduling.
The fact-finding trip also provided a forum for discussing the technology and its potential benefits with experts from Philips Lighting. The Eindhoven-based firm is heavily involved in LED usage, and the tour included visits to some of the locations where its equipment is already being used.
The tour certainly gave us food for thought. Energy efficiency is a sucah major issue for growers and, at a time when margins are under ever-increasing pressure, the sharing of best practice can only benefit the industry.
