Strong wind generation and collapsing coal prices send prices down
Wind generation started off low this week but picked up from Wednesday onwards producing more power than gas by the end of the week. The increase in this generation sent gas prices downwards even further. Temperatures last week were mild compared to seasonal norms, which supported the decrease due to reduced demand and continued healthy supply levels. Electricity tracked gas downwards and was also pressured downwards due to the falling coal prices, which reached the lowest prices since 2017 last week. Coal price reductions were supported by reduced usage by China during Chinese New Year last week.
