A nation that can't control its energy sources can't control its future.Barack Obama
Why has the price of gas suddenly gone up?
The price of gas has been creeping up steadily over the last two months, but in the last few days it has stepped up another gear ... So why has this happened?
Well, three main things:
- A leak on a North Sea platform caused it to shut down. This has caused the price of Brent crude to go up — dragging the price of gas up with it.
- Gas imports from Norway have been reduced, due to a gas processing plant shutting down unexpectedly.
- Italian gas supplies from Libya have been cut off.
There is no clarity / certainty over when any of these issues will be resolved, so the gas markets are getting the jitters ... Even if all the above issues are resolved quickly, I expect we'll see their effect on the price of gas linger for some time.
