Wind farms safe for most birds
Many species of birds are unaffected by onshore wind farms, according to a new study carried out by researchers working for UK bird charities.
Scientists with the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) found that, in many cases, building the turbines was actually more disruptive to birds than operating them.
The research, published in the latest issue of the Journal of Applied Ecology, looked at 18 onshore wind farms on mainland Britain and studied their impact on ten bird species.
The impact of the wind farms varied between species, with numbers of some species recovering after construction, some declining and not recovering, and some actually increasing.
