Biomass Study Tour
More than 30 grower and supplier delegates attended an afternoon seminar at Canons Brook Club in Harlow and visited three nearby nurseries the following day, each with different biomass heating systems.
On the 11th and 12th February 2015 more than 30 grower and supplier delegates attended an afternoon seminar at Canons Brook Club in Harlow and visited three nearby nurseries the following day, each with different biomass heating systems.
In Farm Energy Centre’s Senior Engineer Jon Swain’s words “I would like to thank all who attended and participated in this event, especially the installers and host nurseries. Events of this kind are invaluable to demonstrate the many other considerations beyond purely financial incentive and show how different solutions can be adapted to individual circumstance.”
During the seminar Jon and his colleague Oli Coe, presented the issues needing consideration for those growers who are thinking about installing a biomass system. The topics they covered where:
- RHI – What you need to include
- System types and economics
- Fuels and fuel handling
- Practical and logistical considerations
The speakers, grower delegates and a selection of industry experts participated in a lively and informative open forum session to wrap-up the first day.
The second day consisted of visits very kindly hosted by HDC grower members UK Salads, Guy and Wright and Love my Chillies. These sites demonstrated successful but significantly different biomass implementations in terms of scale, choice of fuel, fuel handling, fuel storage and utilisation of the RHI. They provided the perfect opportunity to speak directly to growers with biomass experience.
A full report of the Biomass Study Tour will be published in the next edition of HDC Energy News. In the meantime the seminar presentations can be viewed or downloaded here.
