  • At the end of February 2014, twenty growers and horticultural industry professionals from the UK visited Ontario and British Columbia on a greenhouse horticulture study tour, organised by the GrowSave team. The group visited 14 organisations which comprised of nurseries, R&D facilities and industry suppliers.
  • Although the flue gasses from a biomass boiler are rich in carbon dioxide, they must be cleaned before they can be used for greenhouse enrichment. A system that does this is the ProSelect GC6, and the only nursery worldwide using the equipment is in Vancouver, Canada.

  • Using heat to control humidity in a greenhouse gives the advantages of a good yielding and a disease-free crop. But with energy prices rising, many growers are left wondering whether humidity control is something they can really afford.
  • Variable speed electric drives (VSDs) enable what are otherwise fixed speed motors to operate a range of speeds and torques from zero to 100%. They can give great process flexibility, reduce wear and tear on machines, and dramatically cut running costs.
  • Boilers may have to be operated at times when no heat is required, so that CO2 can be produced.  The rate of production is dependant on the firing level of the boiler. Two of the simpler set points available for managing CO2 enrichment are maximum boiler capacity for CO2 and minimum boiler capacity for CO2.
